Why the Price Drops as the Project Grows

This surprises people the first time they see it, so it’s worth explaining plainly. A single window job still needs a technician to drive out, measure precisely, and return for a one-off install – the fixed costs of that visit get spread across a small area. Cover twelve windows in the same visit, and those same fixed costs are spread across far more square metres, which is why the whole-home PVC rate ($239/sqm) sits well below the small-project rate ($299/sqm) for the same material.

Practically, this means it’s usually worth thinking about shutters as a whole-of-home decision rather than one room at a time, even if you’re planning to install them in stages – bundling the quote, even for a staged rollout, can lock in the better rate.

What Doesn’t Fit the Standard Table

Worth being upfront about this: the numbers above cover standard rectangular window frames in our regular colour range. They don’t cover everything.

Corner windows, bay windows, arched or angled openings, and tracked sliding or bi-fold door systems all need individual quotes, since they require different hardware and manufacturing approaches than a standard flat panel. If your home has any of these – quite common in Melbourne’s older weatherboard and Edwardian stock – expect your consultant to work out a specific number rather than reading straight off the rate card.

One thing that genuinely doesn’t cost extra: louvre size. Whether you go with the compact 50mm profile or the wide 114mm option, the rate stays the same – it’s a styling choice, not a pricing one.

How This Compares to the Broader Market

We looked at how this stacks up against typical Melbourne and Australian pricing before writing this, rather than assuming. Independent finance site Canstar puts the general market benchmark at roughly $350 per square metre, with a typical whole-home job landing between $2,200 and $3,600 – though that figure appears to reflect smaller or more modest projects than the 25+ window whole-home tier we’ve quoted above. Across the wider market, we also found PVC plantation shutters commonly quoted anywhere from $300 to $600-plus per square metre depending on the supplier.

Does choosing a fancier louvre size or tilt rod style cost more?
Louvre size doesn’t affect price – all five sizes are included at the same rate. Tilt rod style (classic, hidden, or invisible) is a specification to confirm with your consultant rather than a standard rate-card item.

Why is my quote different from the table above?
Most likely a custom element – a bay window, corner window, sliding door track, or non-standard colour – none of which are covered by the standard rectangular-window rates.

Is Basswood really worth roughly $30/sqm more than PVC?
Depends entirely on the room. In a bathroom, PVC wins on function regardless of price. In a living room or bedroom, the natural timber grain and acoustic benefits of Basswood are the actual reason people choose it – the price gap is secondary to which material suits the space.
